Basilica of Vézelay

The Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene is located 16 miles from Avallon and 15 minutes Pontaubert on the D957. A guided tour of approximately one hour is available every day except Monday, but we must make an appointment at +333 86 33 23 69 or +333 86 33 39 50. The confines of the Morvan, Vézelay occupies slopes and summit of a hill overlooking the valley of the Cure. In the golden age of pilgrimage to St Jacques de Compostela, the city was home to 10,000 people in homes nestled along its narrow streets. Saved from ruin by Mérimée and the young architect Viollet-le-Duc, this high spiritual place, a major site of art history, figure since 1979 as World Heritage of Humanity.


Bazoches Castle

Located 10 km from Vézelay by D958 and about 25 minutes Pontaubert, this castle can be visited from late March to early November. For more information, please call +333 86 22 10 22. It takes at least 1:30 visit to the castle, over the gardens. Feudal castle built in the twelfth century. It was after the 1675 Property of Marshal Vauban, which descend the current custodians of this house. You will see examples of a large Aubusson tapestry with patterns of peacocks (17th century), a beautiful model that illustrates a perfect fortification without forgetting libraries and reading rooms.


Chastellux Castle

Located 15 miles from Avallon towards Lormes about 30 minutes Pontaubert. It can be visited from Easter to early November, except Mondays and Tuesdays. You can call +333 86 34 20 03 for more information. It takes 1h30 visit. Belonging to the same family for over 1000 years, this fortress flanked by 8 laps was over the centuries regularly embellished. Many members of this family have marked the history of France, notably at the time of Joan of Arc when the Burgundians fought the French, and that of American Independence with the Marquis de Chastel-lux, a great friend of General Washington and cousin of La Fayette.


Abbaye de Fontenay

Located 6 miles from Montbard about 50 minutes Pontaubert. Discover Easter to 1st November. Allow 1 hour visit. For more information, call +333 80 92 15 00. Founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard Abbey of Fontenay, in the hollow of a valley classified and preserved, is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in France. The visitor finds successively the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, scriptorium, the warming and the forge, built in the middle of a park of 2 hectares. The Abbey of Fontenay is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1981.
